Danks

Kayemba Edward, who performs as Danks (and is sometimes tagged Shatbass), is based in Kampala. He started recording and composing in 2020, drawn in by a run of dancehall artists — Vybz Kartel, Popcaan, Bob Marley and Damian Marley among them. Outside music, he says he's into acting.

Danks describes his own genre bluntly: "a dancehall virus and anti-virus," built on what he calls dancehall algorithms mixed with wordplay — new-school dancehall carrying a heavier lyrical load than a typical riddim-first record. He writes almost entirely by freestyle ("I vibe with freestyle," in his words), and his subject matter runs through social justice, love and self-discovery, built on what he calls a fusion of culture and wordplay.

His breakout moment on record came with "Ghetto Life," released in January 2026 with fellow Kampala artist Jenesis Kimera — a song he credits with carrying his dancehall movement to audiences who hadn't heard him before. It's since been overtaken as his current release by "Musomesa," out in February 2026 via Pyong Records, his most recent catalogued single. In the studio, he's worked repeatedly with producer @klin on a run of singles, and has four music videos out to date.

Danks hasn't logged a big external achievement yet, by his own admission — "haven't made any big achievements apart from making music," he says plainly — but he's clear on what he's chasing: reaching Popcaan, Vybz Kartel and Aidonia as collaborators, and getting his music to "all parts of the world." His mantra sums up the whole project: "Music anti-virus."
