Jwunna
"Jwunna (Uthuman Luyilika) is a Kampala-born rapper and singer shaping an upbeat blend of Afro-swing, melodic rap, and contemporary R&B. Starting out in 2021 by laying mobile freestyles over YouTube instrumentals on Voloco and BandLab, he quickly built a rhythm-first style anchored by Drake-inspired melodies and syncopated bounce. Outside the studio, Jwunna holds a degree in Information Technology and runs an independent business, bringing a disciplined work ethic to his sound. His debut 10-track album, sounds of Kampala, serves as his definitive introduction, capturing the raw ambition, nighttime energy, and musical evolution of the city that raised him. His most recent release, "Contagious" (August 2026), teams him with fellow RIA artist Tou-L over an Amapiano groove — a new lane alongside his established Afro-swing sound."
Born Uthuman Luyilika and raised in Uganda's capital, Jwunna approaches music as both an authentic self-expression and an evolving business craft. An Information Technology graduate and entrepreneur outside the studio, his entry into music was entirely self-directed. In 2021, without access to traditional studio infrastructure, he began recording vocals over YouTube beats directly from his smartphone using Voloco and BandLab. What started as casual experimentation soon revealed a sharp instinct for pocket, cadence, and vocal bounce, prompting him to pursue recording as a serious artistic career.
Jwunna cites Drake as his primary musical reference point, particularly the Canadian artist's transition between hard-hitting rap verses, smooth pop flows, and mood-driven R&B hooks. Fusing that crossover sensibility with the syncopated bounce of Afro-swing and melodic rap, Jwunna's sound is defined by sharp vocal lines, sliding 808s, and lush chords. Guided by a beat-driven workflow and his mantra — "I make music for the girls" — his records prioritize dancefloor groove, late-night romance, and straightforward relatability.
Jwunna's debut 10-track album, sounds of Kampala, is a direct homage to the environment that built him. Rather than presenting a polished fantasy, the project reflects the city's realities, culture, and sonic progression — documenting both the vibrancy and the flaws of modern Ugandan urban life. The album pulls from an elite circle of local production talent, featuring five tracks by Eugene, three by Lacey Trixx, and two by Mainuka, who engineered, mixed, and mastered the entire body of work out of Kanzi Studio. Across the project, standout selections capture Jwunna's identity at its core: "Keep It Real": Jwunna's personal favorite cut from the record, underscoring the honesty, ambition, and loyalty required to navigate the city. "Stepper for Life": A signature record echoing his resilience and work ethic, backed by his favorite bar on the project: "I started with a vision now I'm cellular." Built without shortcuts, sounds of Kampala establishes Jwunna as an essential new voice bridging Kampala's street-level pulse with international crossover appeal.
Since the album, Jwunna has kept moving: the solo single "WAIST" landed under Kanzi Sound Studio in January 2026, and his most current release, "Contagious" (August 26, 2026), pairs him with fellow RIA artist Tou-L over an Amapiano groove — a lane distinct from the Afro-swing and melodic rap that defines his catalog to date. "Contagious" is his clearest focus track for curators right now.
