/ BIOGRAPHY & PRESS STORY

Born Khabuya Vanessa Marion in Jinja, Uganda, and raised with Bugisu roots, KVan was writing songs and forming groups with other kids by the time she was eight years old. Breaking into a dancehall and reggae scene in Uganda that skews heavily male, she describes herself — only half-joking — as the "goodest girl around town," a line she's said comes from real confidence in her own originality rather than an act. Early on, that wasn't a given: she's spoken about struggling to secure studio time and about producers openly criticizing her voice before she found people willing to work with what made her different rather than against it.

KVan works across dancehall, reggae, and Afropop, and puts the relationship between the first two genres simply: "Dancehall is a child of Reggae. Reggae is the mother that gives you the feeling and Dancehall gives you the vibe to dance." That range shows up across her catalog — reggae-rooted cuts like "Oliwa" (on the Rolex Riddim) sit alongside dancehall bangers like "Tabaaza" and Afropop-leaning collaborations like "Nsitula" with Daddy Andre. She's also been vocal about what representation means to her, telling the Future Female Africa network's "Sheros Dialog" series that it comes down to getting a chance to be heard and showing other women in the industry that they can do it too.

KVan debuted in 2017 with the single "Show Dem" and built out her name through Invaders Music alongside labelmate Recho Rey, before leaving in 2019 for the US-based Black Market Records under manager Daddy Andre — a move she framed with real gratitude rather than a clean break: "I am so blessed to have been under Invaders Music, it's home and family, but as an artist I have to grow." That growth arrived in 2026 with her debut full-length album, "Queen Kong," a seven-track project she also had a hand in producing. Built around confidence, love, resilience, and empowerment, it features Cindy Sanyu on "Kill Him," John Blaq on "Amazima," Baza Baza on "Masaaba," and Zex Bilangilangi on "All Over The World," alongside solo cuts "Dancefloor Blaze," "Kampala," and "Nakupenda."

"Sugar Daddy," her single with DJ Fikie, and "Kampala," off "Queen Kong," are the two clearest focus tracks for curators looking for an entry point. KVan has also taken her sound past Uganda's borders: in June 2022 she played two sets at Hamburg's Millerntor Gallery, an international art and music festival, plus a slot at the city's Uebel & Gefährlich club and a studio session at Levi's Studio inside Millerntor Stadium, where she recorded alongside German hip-hop artist Mal Elévé. She was also part of the 2024 Ugandan hip-hop posse cut "ENO HIP HOP CYPHER," sharing a track with Navio, Ruyonga, and Keko among others.

In July 2026, KVan went public with a studio story from her Invaders Music days: she says she helped connect former labelmate Recho Rey with Mun G for what became their "Guma Bakunyige" remix, expecting to land a verse of her own, only to be sent on an errand right as her turn came up and told afterward there wasn't room left for her part. She maintains her background vocals are still audible on that track and on "Cheating." It's the same kind of straight-talk about the industry's rough edges she's been open about since her early days chasing studio time — and a sign she's still very much part of the conversation around Kampala's dancehall scene even as "Queen Kong" remains her current, defining release.
