Yung Jey Basalesale
"Yung Jey Basalesale (Dennis Luganda) is a Kampala hip-hop producer best known for two very different kinds of records: "Bad," a 2020 women's-empowerment posse cut uniting six female Ugandan artists, and St. Nelly-Sade's annual "Rap Up" recap songs, which he produced for 2022 and 2023. A 2020 MTN UG Hip-Hop Awards Producer of the Year nominee, he's also behind Vkaycee's single "Kata.""
Dennis Luganda records under the name Yung Jey Basalesale (also credited in some places as "Yung Ley Basalesale"), working as a hip-hop producer and engineer out of a Kampala recording studio. Public confirmation of his work comes less from a personal origin story and more from the records he's put his name on as a credited producer — a track record built quietly, one placement at a time, inside Uganda's Lugaflow and hip-hop scene rather than in front of a camera.
His production sits inside Kampala hip-hop and Lugaflow, built for artists who lead with lyrics rather than dancefloor hooks — St. Nelly-Sade's rapid-fire, comedic year-in-review records and Vkaycee's more straightforward single "Kata" both carry his production credit. That range — comic recap songs on one end, a message-driven posse cut on the other — is the clearest evidence of his versatility as a producer, since no interview or public statement from him about his own creative process is currently available.
His two clearest placements are St. Nelly-Sade's "Rap Up 2022" and "Rap Up 2023" — the Lugaflow rapper's now-annual tradition of summarizing each year's biggest talking points in one song — and "Bad," a 2020 video and single that brought together six female Ugandan artists for a women's-empowerment anthem, covered at the time as a rare all-female Kampala posse cut. He also produced "Kata" for artist Vkaycee.
Yung Jey Basalesale's industry standing shows up most clearly in the numbers around him rather than in his own quotes: a Producer of the Year nomination at the 2020 MTN UG Hip-Hop Awards, placed alongside Uganda's most-recognized beatmakers. With St. Nelly-Sade's "Rap Up" now a yearly fixture, his production credit is attached to one of Kampala hip-hop's most consistent annual releases — a solid, if quiet, resume for a producer who lets the records speak for him.
